Its Sticking To My Fingers

January 6th, 2010 at 09:40 pm

What to do, what to do. I was getting the Christmas boxes out today, time for the tree to come down, and I have a lot of "don't know what to do with its" There is a lot of stuff stored in my closet that I was given as keepsakes, or told someone that I would take as a keepsake, and I need to make some decisions. Case in point: I have a wrapper (robe) and slippers made by my great-grandmother, when she was elderly, in case she had to go to the hospital. Its brand new, she died quietly in her bed at home. My mother kept it for years in her cedar chest, and when she was cleaning it out one time, she was going to throw it away, and I said, no, i'll take it. A keepsake, right? I just thought it was sad to throw it away, but now, what do I do with it? These things just stick to my fingers. No one else in the family is ever going to want it. It has no real value other than it's old fabric. But it still makes me sad to think of just tossing it in the trash. And thats just the tip of the iceberg. I also have a set of World Book Encyclopedias from the 1940's that my Grandmother bought when her children started country school, they are in immaculate condition! She gave them to me 25+ years ago, to get them off her bookshelves, they have been carefully wrapped in brown paper, in the bottom of my closet ever since. I have surfed thru ebay a few times, thinking that I might sell them, but they have no real value, it would cost more to ship them than I would ever get for a price. How do you decide what to do with those kinds of things?

You could try to sell/give away on craigslist or freecycle. Sometimes things just have to be tossed, too. Don't be afraid to do so, if it comes down to helping you clear your space.

I'd donate them, or offer them free on Craigslist or Freecycle.

I just donated a pile of homemade sweaters my mom knitted for me as a child (teenager, anyway). Though I used to wear them when I walked to school and such, the weather is far too warm her for me to wear knit sweaters. I just don't tend to be *outside* much at all when I could use one. I kept those sweaters for a LONG time, but was easier to give away this year knowing so many people are struggling in this economy - knew they could get good use.

That is why I LOVE freecycle though. Not that I'd label your stuff, "junk," at all. But literally, one person's "junk" is another person's treasure. I've freecycled SO MANY things that I would have had to trash otherwise.

I'm guilty of keeping things like that, particularly if that's all I have from a person. I limit myself to three large containers, though. So far, I only have 1 and half of another full but I figure three containers for a lifetime of keepsakes isn't bad. They're stacked neatly in a closet and they aren't in the way and if I want to pull something out of one I easily can. Oh, that's three that aren't for my daughter's things. She has three of her own.

Fabric items you can have made into a memory quilt. I am making one for my stepdaughters out of their mothers clothing--actually I am making them each a baby blanket quilt from them.
